Shuffle Off to Lanark Village

Life in Lanark is like being on a cruise. There’s always something to do, and you don’t have to wander far from your room to find food, friends, and entertainment.

On cruises, as in Lanark life, there’s lots of sunshine and salt water. There are plenty of great day trips for when you’re docked. Also - there’s shuffleboard, a sport rarely spotted outside a cruise ship’s deck but perfect for fun “at sea” days when you don’t feel like straying too far from your cabin.

The object of a game of shuffleboard is to slide a puck down the length of the court, aiming for the marked-off frame that will earn the greatest number of points. The puck is maneuvered with a cue stick and must stay within the court’s boundaries to score.

In some ways, it’s not unlike golf (you hit a small object with a long one, hoping it will land where you want it to), so it’s not surprising that the Lanark shuffleboard court is located on Golf Club property.

Players meet there every Saturday at 2 (check the Village Idiot Facebook page to confirm), and even participated in the first Lanark Village Shuffleboard Tournament this summer.

The group donated proceeds raised from the sale of food and drinks at the tournament to the Golf Club to be used for the construction of our pickleboard court, which will be located in the parking lot in front of Chillas Hall. Nola and Norm won the championship, with the Bodacious Brahs claiming 2nd prize. The Beachy Ladies (Dee & Susan) came in 3rd.

But in truth, anyone who played or came out to watch was a winner because it was a pleasant day in a pleasant place with good people working playing together for a good cause. Cruise on by the court next Saturday and you’ll see what I mean.
