Keep Lanark Village Beautiful

Even though Lanark Village Florida is unique in many ways, including its converted WWII barrack homes, its distinction of being both near the coastline and above the frequent flood zone, and its active community get-togethers, in one way we’re just like everywhere else - we make trash.

The LVA sponsors a clean-up day in the Village every year, and on that day, residents can get rid of all the big items they never got around to hauling to the dump.

We do pretty well in other ways, too. Residents bring unwanted or unused items, especially food items, to Chillas Hall to give them a chance to find new homes rather than be tossed. Books and magazines are passed between readers through small libraries inside and in front of the Hall. Volunteers keep the pet potty station full of bags and the waste can emptied.

However, there are ways we can do better. For example, last year someone put a plastic Christmas tree, lights and all, in one of the organic waste piles located in a few spots in the Village for periodic pickup.

I mean, it is a tree, technically, but still…c’mon.

Garbage is a fact of life and we need to deal with it with integrity. That’s why I was glad to see the Keep Franklin County Beautiful campaign for recycling aluminum cans. They’re asking for a Lanark volunteer.

If this seems like a good way for you to give back to the community, you can contact them through Facebook Messenger. Let them know you want to do your part to keep Lanark Village beautiful, by taking care of trash responsibly rather than kicking that can down the road.
